Five of the best free MMORPGs, picked for how well they carry the lane this site follows: 2D art, Korean roots and the free-to-play model.

How this list is chosen
A game earns a place among the best free MMORPGs if you can create an account and play without paying, and if it carries at least one trait of the lane: 2D presentation, Korean origin or a free-to-play shop. The list names its games first and gives its reason second. It carries no scores, because no scoring method here would be better than a reader's own.
Details such as pricing and player numbers change often, so this page of best free MMORPGs states only what stays true across years and shows an as-of date. A reader who wants a replacement for a closed archive game can start with the picks for games like MapleStory.
The best free MMORPG picks
Ordered by how many traits of the lane each game carries, then alphabetically.

Nexon's MapleStory is the reference point for the lane: a 2D side-scrolling MMORPG from Korea that is free to start. The picks on this site use it as the yardstick.

Image: Amazon Game Studios, from the Lost Ark Steam store page. Shown to identify the game; the image belongs to its owners. Lost Ark
Smilegate's Lost Ark comes from Korea and is free to start. It is an action MMORPG viewed from above rather than from the side. Shacknews reported on 12 August 2026 that Amazon will end its live service for the game in the West in early 2027 and that Smilegate will take it over.

Image: Jagex Ltd, from the RuneScape Steam store page. Shown to identify the game; the image belongs to its owners. RuneScape
Jagex's RuneScape is free to start on Steam with an optional paid membership, a different shop model from the item mall. Its mobile app is described differently on the mobile list: a free download with a seven-day trial.

Image: ArenaNet, NCSOFT, from the Guild Wars 2 Steam store page. Shown to identify the game; the image belongs to its owners. Guild Wars 2
ArenaNet's Guild Wars 2 offers a free account. It is the list's example of a Western game that follows the free-to-start rule.

Jagex's Old School RuneScape keeps a classic version of RuneScape and is free to start with an optional membership.

What free to start means in practice
All five games on this page list "Free To Play" on their Steam store pages as of 30 October 2026, and all five also carry the In-App Purchases flag. Free to start therefore describes the entry price only. What a player pays for later depends on which of three models the publisher chose.
The first model is the points or item shop. Nexon America's MapleStory page on Steam lists 25 Points Shop items such as avatars and profile backgrounds, and Smilegate's Lost Ark page lists in-game purchases without describing them in detail. In both cases the store page shows the existence of a shop and says little about what it sells beyond the examples named.
The second model is an optional membership. Jagex describes membership on the Old School RuneScape Steam page as unlocking 8 additional skills, the full world map, over 120 additional quests, exclusive items and mini games. The same page says membership can be bought with Bonds, which are either purchased or earned in game, and that the membership is shared with RuneScape. A free player can still log in, but the page makes clear that part of the game map and skill list sits behind the paywall.
The third model is the paid expansion on a free base game. ArenaNet's Guild Wars 2 Steam page says the core game is free and that Living World seasons 1 and 2 are included. Upgrading a free account with an expansion adds log-in rewards, extra character and bag slots and expanded chat features, according to the same page. The expansions are sold separately, so the free account works as a permanent entry tier and not as a time-limited trial.
How the five games differ on cost
Prices and bundles change often, so this page names the structure of each shop instead of copying a price list. The structure on the Steam pages reviewed is as follows.
RuneScape and Old School RuneScape share one membership, but their Steam pages sell it differently. The RuneScape page lists RuneCoin packs and membership bundles, while the Old School RuneScape page lists a Points Shop with 8 items and sells membership in one-month and twelve-month blocks. Both pages note cross-play between PC and mobile, which ties into the mobile list.
Release dates on Steam also differ from the age of the games. Steam shows 22 February 2013 for Old School RuneScape, 9 August 2012 for MapleStory, 14 October 2020 for RuneScape, 11 February 2022 for Lost Ark and 23 August 2022 for Guild Wars 2. Those are the dates of the Steam listings, so they say nothing about when each game first reached players elsewhere.
Platform support is narrower than the free price suggests. The Steam pages reviewed list Windows and macOS for MapleStory, RuneScape and Old School RuneScape, and Windows only for Lost Ark and Guild Wars 2. MapleStory also discloses kernel-level anti-cheat on its page, a point worth reading before installing anything.
What this list leaves out
Several free-to-start games sit outside this page on purpose. The seven archive games have their own pages under the archive, because the archive is organised around what happened to each service between 2010 and 2013. WonderKing is free to play on Steam since its relaunch of 12 January 2026, and Atlantica Global and Atlantica Europe are free to play on Steam through VALOFE, yet both are covered on their archive pages and not repeated here. Dark Eden Origin is also free to play on Steam, but it needs a third-party Korean account, which makes it a poor fit for a list that promises account creation without friction.
The list also leaves out games that have no free account at all, and games whose service dates are in flux. For Lost Ark the page keeps its entry because the game is free today, with the Shacknews report of 12 August 2026 attached as context. If a publisher confirms a new end date, the entry will change with it.
No player counts, review percentages or rankings are used to build the order. Steam review scores shift weekly and measure the mood of one storefront, not the quality of a game across regions. The page uses only traits that stay true over time.
How the order was set
Each game earns one point for 2D presentation, one for Korean origin and one for a free-to-play shop, and ties keep the page's editorial sequence. MapleStory carries all three and leads. Lost Ark carries two. RuneScape, Guild Wars 2 and Old School RuneScape carry only the free-to-start trait, so they follow, with the current RuneScape placed ahead of its classic version.
The method is deliberately plain so a reader can rerun it. Anyone who weighs the traits differently will arrive at a different order, and the entries above give the facts needed to do that.
Questions about this list
What does free to start mean?
You can create an account and play without paying. Some games add an optional shop or membership.
Why are there no scores?
No scoring method on this site would be better than a reader's own, so the list gives reasons instead.
Where are the games from the archive?
They have their own pages, because most of them are closed or paused. See the archive.
Do free MMORPG accounts have limits?
Some do. As of 30 October 2026, the Guild Wars 2 Steam page says expansions add extra character and bag slots, and the Old School RuneScape page says membership adds skills, quests and the full world map.
Are these games available on Mac?
It varies. As of 30 October 2026, the Steam pages list Windows and macOS for MapleStory, RuneScape and Old School RuneScape, and Windows only for Lost Ark and Guild Wars 2.
