Old MMORPGs from 2008 to 2012: the archive games by Western release
The seven archive games reached Western players between October 2008 and August 2012. Four still have a running official release, and three do not.

How old is old
This hub uses a plain cut: a game counts as an old MMORPG here when its first Western release dates from 2012 or earlier. All seven archive games meet it. The oldest, Atlantica Online, reached North America on 30 October 2008 (RPGFan).
Age tells you little about whether a game still runs. Atlantica Online and WonderKing run today on Steam, while SevenCore, the youngest, does not.

Reading the release order
The order is lopsided. One game dates from 2008, two from 2010, three from the last quarter of 2011 and one from 2012. WindSlayer 2's closed beta (20 October 2011, DSOGaming), DarkEden's closed beta (November 2011, GameBanshee) and Rosh Online's launch (7 December 2011, Engadget) all fall within seven weeks.
The Ignited Games site itself is the other way to read the list. Its June 2012 page shows five titles, and SevenCore had joined them by August 2013. The Ignited Games catalogue tracks which games it listed on each date.

The same years elsewhere
The archive games were not alone in aging out. Sony Online Entertainment and LucasArts announced on 24 June 2011 that Star Wars Galaxies would end on 15 December 2011, and GameBanshee reported that new and reactivated accounts stopped on 15 September 2011. Mythic announced on 18 September 2013, the fifth anniversary of Warhammer Online's release, that services would end on 18 December 2013, a decision Game Informer tied to the end of a licensing agreement with Games Workshop. The dead MMOs hub lines these dates up against the archive's own closures.
Some games from the period changed model instead of closing. DualShockers reported on 28 October 2011 that Square Enix would publish Ankama's Wakfu, with a launch in February 2012, and Engadget's Justin Olivetti wrote on 19 September 2014 that the Steam revamp eliminated subscriptions. The guide to free-to-play cash shops explains the models the archive games used.
A reading order for the old archive
Oldest to youngest, with the thinnest records last.
- Open Atlantica Online regional versions for the 2008 launch and the 2011 and 2016 publisher changes.
- Read WonderKing's release date page for the 2010 launch and the 2011 pause.
- Read the Karos Online shutdown page for the April 2012 move to Rosh Online.
- Use the timeline to check the dates side by side.

Questions about old MMORPGs
What is the oldest game in the archive?
Atlantica Online, which had North American servers up and running from 30 October 2008 according to RPGFan.
Can old MMORPGs still be played?
Some can. As of 30 October 2026 Atlantica Online, WonderKing, DarkEden (as Dark Eden Origin) and Karos Online have running official releases.
Is the Steam version of Karos Online the original?
No. It is GameXP.com's version released on 24 December 2014, not the original service that closed in April 2012.
Which old games have no running service?
Rosh Online, WindSlayer 2 and SevenCore.
Which old game was closed first in the archive?
WonderKing's Ignited Games servers were due off on 29 December 2011, ahead of Karos Online's 13 April 2012, according to the msupdate blog and Engadget.
Were other well-known MMOs closing in the same years?
Yes. Star Wars Galaxies ended on 15 December 2011 and Warhammer Online on 18 December 2013, per GameBanshee and Game Informer.
