From beta call to open beta

Gaming Nexus reported on 26 September 2011 that Ignited Games, based in El Segundo, California, was recruiting players for the North American closed beta of WindSlayer 2. The company line, quoted there, was "WindSlayer 2 is a fun online RPG and we expect our players will enjoy it as much as we do."

Eleven days later, on 7 October 2011, Massively published an exclusive introduction to the game, carried on Engadget. It describes a 2D side-scroller and says Ignited Games was "understandably excited to show off WindSlayer 2 as it enters closed beta."

The closed beta went live on 20 October 2011, according to the DSOGaming post titled "WindSlayer 2 Goes Into Closed Beta."

Open beta and what it offered

MMOBomb reported the open beta as live on 4 November 2011. Its coverage describes a free-to-play game set in the fantasy world of Beuritania, with a hub area called the Playground. Two systems get named: pets, and a mentor system for pairing experienced players with newcomers.

Reader comments on MMOBomb compare the game to MapleStory and Grand Chase. Those are readers, not critics, and no review of WindSlayer 2 turned up.

Open questions

The coverage does not name the game's developer or say where it first launched. The closing date and the list of other regional versions are blank too.

The same goes for any mechanics beyond pets and mentoring.

How it plays

Massively's introduction of 7 October 2011 lists five classes: Archer, Mage, Monk, Rogue and Warrior. Gaming Nexus, on 26 September 2011, lists six, adding the priest. The two lists differ, and this site does not pick between them.

Gaming Nexus also lists arena PvP modes called Team Fight, Death Match and Capture the Flag, pets driven by artificial intelligence that help with hunting and collecting, and a mentor system in which expert players teach newcomers in exchange for rewards. MMOBomb mentioned the pet and mentor systems again when the open beta began on 4 November 2011. These descriptions come from press-release style coverage.

How it was received

No review of the 2011 game turned up. The coverage that exists is announcement writing.

  • “a 2-D side-scrolling title that keeps the action fast and furious.”
