How the best mobile MMORPGs were picked
A game qualifies as a mobile MMORPG here if it runs on Android or iOS, shares a persistent online world with other players, and has been reported on by a publisher or by gaming press that we could read. Popularity charts and star ratings are not used. They change by the week and differ by store.
The site follows 2D, Korean and free-to-play games, and the list does not force that lane. MapleStory M is the obvious lane match, but the only report found on its current status was a single secondhand account of a Steam launch, and that Steam listing is a PC release, so its mobile status is unclear and it has no entry. Where a game is free to start, the tags say so.
Everything below is stated as of 30 October 2026. Prices, servers and content plans change, so the entries give launch dates and the model the publisher described, not a promise about next month.
The best mobile MMORPGs
Ordered by the first dated mobile event in each entry, oldest first. Status as of 30 October 2026.

Jagex's Old School RuneScape was released on iOS and Android on 30 October 2018, according to TouchArcade. Engadget reported on 1 November 2018 that it was out on both, free to play, and that it works with the same accounts as the desktop client. PocketGamer.biz reported that the iOS launch brought over one million downloads.

A Sandbox Interactive press release dated 9 June 2021 announced the iOS and Android launch that day. It describes the mobile version as the complete game on the same single global server as the desktop version, with one account across devices; the studio has since added separate Asia and Europe worlds, so that wording describes the 2021 launch. Gfinity Esports described it as free to play with in-app purchases.

Pocket Tactics, on a page updated 17 June 2021, listed Jagex's RuneScape on iOS (App Store) and Android (Google Play). It describes the app as free to download with a seven-day free trial, and says the mobile versions have full cross-play with the PC original, so progress carries across devices. The page does not describe membership terms, so check the store listing for what follows the trial.
Dofus Touch
Ankama relaunched Dofus Touch on iOS and Android on 3 April 2024 with a new English server, according to its press release. The combat is tactical and turn-based, and the game is a prequel to the Wakfu animated series. Ankama calls it true free-to-play, with bonus packs, cosmetics and optional services as paid extras.
Tarisland
PCGamesN reported on 28 May 2024 that Tarisland would launch on 21 June 2024 on PC and mobile, free to play at release, and named Locojoy and Level Infinite as the developers. Games Press carried Level Infinite's release saying the game went live worldwide that day through the App Store, Google Play and its official website. Its status as of 30 October 2026 is unclear, so treat it as a 2024 launch only.
Black Desert Mobile
Pearl Abyss published its Heidel Ball 2026 update schedule for Black Desert Mobile on 14 July 2026. MassivelyOP reported on 18 August 2026 that the game marked one year of its united global server, merged on 19 August 2025, with five weeks of events.
Odin: Valhalla Rising
Kakao Games launched Odin: Valhalla Rising globally on PC and mobile on 29 April 2025, per its press release. The studio is Lionheart Studio. Cogconnected reported in April 2026 that the first anniversary update added a Bard class.
Ragnarok Origin Classic
Gravity launched Ragnarok Origin Classic in North, Central and South America on 23 July 2026, on PC and mobile, according to its release carried by MassivelyOP on 26 July 2026. The Americas version uses a monthly pass, so it is not free to start.
Facts come from the publisher releases and press reports named in each entry. Store ratings and download counts are not used.
What changes when an MMORPG moves to a phone
The oldest entry shows the pattern. PocketGamer.biz reported that Old School RuneScape's iOS launch followed a members-only Android beta, and that the iOS launch brought over one million downloads. The account system stayed the same, so a player could log in on a desktop and a phone alike. Pocket Tactics reports the same for RuneScape: full cross-play with the PC version.
Albion Online took the same route with a different design. At its June 2021 launch its mobile build ran beside the PC game on one single global server, so a guild could mix desktop and phone players. Odin: Valhalla Rising went the other way and launched on PC and mobile together in April 2025.
The lower half of the list is built from Tarisland, Black Desert Mobile, Odin: Valhalla Rising and Ragnarok Origin Classic, and their cost models differ: the table shows free to play for Tarisland and Odin, a monthly pass for Ragnarok Origin Classic and no stated model for Black Desert Mobile. Read the shop terms in the store listing before you commit time to any of them.
Tarisland and Odin: Valhalla Rising each launched on phones and PC at the same time, in June 2024 and April 2025 respectively. Ragnarok Origin Classic did the same in July 2026 for the Americas. The older entries came to phones after years on desktop.
Not covered: store ratings, download counts and revenue rankings, because none can be checked against a stable source, and games that could not be checked, such as MapleStory M. A game missing from the list is not a judgment on it.
The archive games from 2010 to 2013 were PC clients, and phones played no part in their story. The games archive covers them one by one, and the free MMORPG list covers what to play on a desktop today.
Check the store listing for in-app purchases and trial terms before installing: of the eight, only the cost wording in the sources named above is used here, and it can change.
