2D MMORPGs: side-scrolling and isometric games, archive and beyond

A 2D MMORPG draws its world on a flat plane, seen from the side or from a fixed isometric angle. Three of the seven archive games qualify, and the wider field starts with MapleStory.

What counts as a 2D MMORPG

A 2D MMORPG is an online role-playing game whose world is drawn in two dimensions. Two layouts cover almost all of them. In a side-scroller your character runs left and right and jumps between platforms. In an isometric game you look down at a fixed angle and move across a tilted grid.

The best-known 2D MMORPG is MapleStory. Its Steam store page describes it as a 2D side-scrolling MMORPG, lists Nexon America Inc. as publisher and NEXON Korea Corporation as developer, and shows it as free to play. This hub uses it only as a reference point. The rest of the page sorts the archive games.

The 2D games in the archive

Two side-scrollers and one isometric game. Turn-based Atlantica Online has its own list further down.

What each archive page shows

Each 2D game has its own file on this site, and the files answer different questions. WonderKing has the longest record, including a page on its release date and regional versions. DarkEden has a versions page that separates the Asian original, the 2011 North American service and the Steam releases. WindSlayer 2 has a single page, built on its October and November 2011 beta dates.

The Western service changed more often than the layout did. Gaming Nexus reported Ndoors Interactive's WonderKing open beta on 7 January 2010 and the launch on 28 January 2010. Ignited Games ran the game in 2011 and announced a temporary closure on 17 December 2011, with the item mall closing on 5 December and the servers going off on 29 December, per the msupdate blog and MMOHuts of 20 December 2011. Steam lists a wondersoft relaunch dated 12 January 2026, and no report ties it to the earlier services.

DarkEden followed a different path. Engadget reported on 15 December 2011 that an earlier North American launch had been aborted in 2008, and GameBanshee reported Ignited's closed beta on 8 November 2011. SOFTON's Steam page for the 28 November 2016 release now says the game is no longer available on the store, while the separate Dark Eden Origin page gives 17 August 2017. WindSlayer 2's record stops at the open beta of 4 November 2011.

How far the 2D label stretches

Store pages do not agree on what counts as flat. MapleStory's Steam page uses the plain 2D side-scrolling label. Elsword's calls the game a 2.5D side-scroller and Dragon Saga's says 3D side-scrolling, so neither fits this hub's definition by its own description. Both appear on the games like MapleStory list because the play style is close.

Class counts give another way to compare. The Steam pages list four base classes for the 2026 WonderKing, 10 classes with more than 50 job specializations for La Tale, and more than 40 classes for MapleStory. Those are store-page claims, not counts verified in play. The MapleStory classes guide covers how Nexon organizes its roster.

A reading order for the 2D archive

Five steps, from the clearest record to the thinnest.

  1. Start with WonderKing, the clearest 2D case, with a dated closure and a relaunch.
  2. Read the DarkEden versions page to see how an isometric game's record differs.
  3. Finish the archive with WindSlayer 2, which has the shortest record.
  4. Move to games like MapleStory for 2D picks outside the archive.
  5. Read 2D MMORPG engines for how games of this kind are built.

Where the 2D lane goes next

If you came for a 2D MMORPG similar to the ones above, the list pages go further. Games like MapleStory and games like Atlantica Online and WonderKing pick by traits. Turn-based MMORPGs covers the one archive game that does not run in real time.

Engines and tooling have their own page, 2D MMORPG engines. The Korean MMORPGs hub shows how the same games sort by developer instead of by layout.
