Games like Atlantica Online and WonderKing: seven sourced picks

Atlantica Online and WonderKing were both handled by NDOORS at one point but share little else, so games like Atlantica Online and WonderKing split into two lanes: turn-based combat and 2D side-scrolling play.

Two games, two kinds of replacement

If you are looking for games like Atlantica Online, the trait to match is combat. RPGFan wrote in 2009 that Atlantica Online sports a turn-based strategy style combat system. Gaming Nexus added in its August 2008 beta coverage that movement in the overworld is real time while fights are turn-based.

WonderKing is the other case. Its own page on this site records a 2D side-scrolling MMORPG, in the words of the msupdate blog that carried Ignited Games' December 2011 notice. Anyone who wants games like WonderKing should look for a flat, left-and-right world, not for a publisher.

The list stays selective. Only games with a cited report for the trait they are picked for are included, and the archive itself holds seven titles, so closed games such as WonderKing are not offered as replacements for each other.

The seven picks

Each pick names the source for its genre, publisher and status. Prices and server status can change, so check the publisher before you sign up.

  1. Dofus

    Turn-based2DAnkama

RPGFan's interview with Ankama describes the original Dofus as a turn-based strategy MMORPG based in Flash. It is the closest match to Atlantica Online's fight-by-turns structure. Gamasutra reported on 1 October 2009 that Dofus ran a hybrid model: a free zone covering about 10 percent of the game, with a monthly subscription of 6.9 USD or 5 EUR for the rest. No current price is listed. The Dofus Unity rebuild launched on 3 December 2024, according to Gamewave, which names Ankama as developer and publisher. Steam's older Dofus page, however, says the game is no longer available on the Steam store.

  2. Steam header art: the Wakfu logo beside an orange-haired hero swinging a flaming sword

    Wakfu

    Turn-basedTacticalAnkama

Massively's closed beta preview of 14 February 2011 describes timed turns, placing your character before a fight and setting traps, and calls the combat almost identical to Dofus. Engadget reported on 19 September 2014 that the Steam version was due to eliminate subscriptions completely. For an Atlantica Online player, it is the other Ankama option, with the same turn structure in a newer setting. Steam lists it today as free to play from Ankama Studio, published by Ankama Games, with a Steam release date of 18 September 2014 and tags including Turn-Based and 2D. Checked on 30 October 2026.

  3. Steam header art: the Pirate101 logo beside a green-haired pirate in a red coat swinging from a rope in front of a ship
Image: KingsIsle Entertainment, gamigo group, from the Pirate101 Steam store page. Shown to identify the game; the image belongs to its owners.

    Pirate101

    Turn-basedTacticsKingsIsle

Steam lists Pirate101 as a pirate-themed, turn-based tactics MMORPG from KingsIsle Entertainment, released on Steam on 31 May 2023 and published with gamigo group. You recruit companions and use their skills to trigger combos, which is the nearest echo of Atlantica Online's party of mercenaries among the picks. The page lists it as free to play with in-app purchases and requires an account at pirate101.com. Checked on 30 October 2026.

  4. Dofus Touch

    Turn-basedMobileAnkama

Ankama's press release of 3 April 2024 announced the global relaunch of Dofus Touch for iOS and Android, with a new English server. The release says players "engage in strategic, turn-based fights" and that all content can be accessed without spending money. It is the way to get Dofus-style fights on a phone, not a PC.

  5. Steam header art: the MapleStory logo with two robot-headed characters holding maracas and a microphone on a purple stage
Image: Nexon America Inc., from the MapleStory Steam store page. Shown to identify the game; the image belongs to its owners.

    MapleStory

    2DSide-scrollingNexon

Nexon's MapleStory is the reference point for the 2D lane this site follows, and the nearest match to WonderKing's flat, side-scrolling play. See the site's separate list of games like MapleStory for its neighbors. Nexon's own MapleStory page, checked on 30 October 2026, also offers a classic version that lets players revisit the game as it was when it first launched. Steam lists MapleStory as free to play from NEXON Korea Corporation, published by Nexon America, with a release date of 9 August 2012, and calls it "the original side-scrolling MMORPG". Checked on 30 October 2026.

  6. Steam header art: the Dungeon Fighter Online logo beside a blue-haired girl in white and orange clothes against a sky of floating towers
Image: Neople, from the Dungeon Fighter Online Steam store page. Shown to identify the game; the image belongs to its owners.

    Dungeon Fighter Online

    2DSide-scrollingNeople

Steam lists Dungeon Fighter Online as free to play from Neople, released on Steam on 9 August 2016, with "unique side scrolling 2D action" and inspiration from arcade games such as Golden Axe and Double Dragon. It plays closer to a brawler than to WonderKing's skill-and-class RPG, so treat it as a cousin for the side-scrolling view only. Two paid DLC packs are listed. Checked on 30 October 2026.

  7. Steam header art: the Elsword logo beside a red-haired fighter in a white coat and a purple-haired mage with a winged staff
Image: KOG Games, from the Elsword Steam store page. Shown to identify the game; the image belongs to its owners.

    Elsword

    2DSide-scrollingKOG Games

Steam lists Elsword as a free online action RPG from KOG, published by KOG Games, released on Steam on 2 July 2014. The page says it "uses classic side-scrolling beat 'em up gameplay mechanics" and carries the tags Side Scroller and 2D. It is a closer fit for the action side of WonderKing than the turn-based Dofus line. Checked on 30 October 2026.

Source dates are given in each entry. Checked as of 30 October 2026.

How we chose and what is left out

Every pick had to pass three checks: a source stating its genre, a source naming its publisher, and a store or publisher page showing it is available as of 30 October 2026. Steam pages and Ankama's own releases did most of the work. Titles where sources disagree, such as Eden Eternal, whose Steam page describes a 3D, third-person game, were dropped from the side-scrolling lane.

Player counts are not shown for any pick, because none is verified. Some Steam pages carry publisher-reported figures, and those are left out too. For the two archive games themselves, the Atlantica Online regional versions article and the WonderKing release date article hold the verified record, including the point that Nexon, not Ignited Games, published the English Atlantica Online.
