Ignited Games: a guide to 2D, Korean and free-to-play MMORPGs
An independent guide to the side-scrolling, Korean and free-to-play MMORPGs that reached Western players from 2008 on, and to the games that fill the same lane today. Seven archive games have their own pages, five hubs and nine lists sort the rest, and each date carries a named source.

What Ignited Games covers
The site follows one lane of online games: side-scrolling and other 2D MMORPGs, Korean free-to-play titles, and the services that were published in the West and later changed or closed. It has two layers. The archive holds seven free-to-play games, from Atlantica Online's 2008 North American launch to WonderKing's 2026 return on Steam. The present layer holds nine lists and five hubs about the games that fill the same lane today.
A game belongs to the lane through three overlapping traits: 2D art, Korean origin, and a free-to-play shop. MapleStory is the reference point most readers know, and the lists use it as a yardstick. Every date on the site names its source, and every status carries an as-of date. About the site explains how pages are researched.
The seven archive games
Four have a running official release today, and three have no running official service. Each card opens a page with the dated record and the source behind it.

How pages are researched
Four steps, the same for every page.
Start from dated sources
Research starts from dated press coverage and publisher announcements.
Source: Editorial policyName the source
A claim enters a game page only when a dated report, listing or announcement states it, and the page shows the source and the date it was last checked.
Source: Editorial policySay what is missing
Where a fact cannot be found, the page says so. Player counts, revenue and review scores are left out of the archive, because the available coverage does not supply them.
Source: Editorial policyCorrect and re-date
A page is corrected when a better source replaces the one it used, and the new date shows on the page.

Questions about the games
What happened to Atlantica Online?
Atlantica Online, a turn-based tactical MMORPG, launched in Korea in January 2008 under NDOORS and had North American servers up and running from 30 October 2008 (RPGFan). Nexon took over North American publishing on 22 March 2011 (Engadget, 9 March 2011), and Ignited Games ran the Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese versions. VALOFE put Atlantica Global on Steam on 14 May 2020 and Atlantica Europe on 20 May 2021, both free to play, as the Steam store pages show.
Is WonderKing still playable?
Yes. A relaunch by wondersoft was released on Steam on 12 January 2026, free to play, as the Steam store page shows, and Steam listed Mixed reviews, 42% positive of 388, on 30 October 2026. The original North American service launched on 28 January 2010 under Ndoors Interactive (Gaming Nexus), and Ignited Games closed its item mall on 5 December 2011 and its servers on 29 December 2011 (msupdate blog, 17 December 2011).
When did Karos Online close?

When did WindSlayer 2 enter beta?
The closed beta went live on 20 October 2011 (DSOGaming) and the open beta on 4 November 2011 (MMOBomb). No running official service was found as of 30 October 2026.
What does the Rosh Online record show?

Questions about the lane and the site
What is a 2D side-scrolling MMORPG?
It is an online role-playing game drawn on a flat plane, where characters walk, jump and fight along a horizontal stage instead of moving through a three-dimensional world. Combat usually happens in real time on that same plane, and towns act as shared hubs. MapleStory is the best-known example of the style, and the lane is often described by comparison with it.
Why did so many Korean free-to-play MMOs close?
No single cause is documented across the games here, and the guide does not invent one. Specific reasons are on record only for some closures: WonderKing's 2011 shutdown was attributed to "unresolved issues with the developers" (the msupdate notice, 17 December 2011), and Karos Online's Western servers were due to close on 13 April 2012 with its players moved to Rosh Online (Engadget, 6 April 2012). Each game page records only what the reporting states.
What are the best free MMORPGs now?
The Best Of section holds nine lists, each with a stated rule and an as-of date. Start with Best free MMORPGs, then try Upcoming MMORPGs, Games like MapleStory or Korean MMORPGs worth playing now.
What does the archive cover?
Seven free-to-play MMORPGs: Atlantica Online, WonderKing, DarkEden, Rosh Online, WindSlayer 2, SevenCore and Karos Online. Each has a game page with a dated record. Atlantica Online and Karos Online reached the West before Ignited Games existed, so the timeline runs from 2008 to 2026.
Does Ignited Games offer downloads or play buttons?
No. The site hosts no games and no downloads. Where an official release is running, the game page links to the publisher's own page under Where to play today. It has no private servers, no advertising and no betting content.
How are as-of dates and corrections handled?
Every status line carries an as-of date, shown beside the label. When a better source replaces an older one, the label and date change together and the old claim is not left in place. A value nothing supports is shown as unknown. This page was last reviewed on 30 October 2026.
